Ayanamsa Types (Universal Standards)

Ayanamsa is the most critical technical setting in Vedic Astrology (Jyotish). It represents the longitudinal difference between the Tropical Zodiac (used in Western astrology) and the Sidereal Zodiac (used in Vedic astrology).

1. Core Standards (Most Commonly Used)

JyotishGrid supports over 40 Ayanamsa standards, but three dominate professional practice:

Lahiri (Chitra Paksha)

  • Status: The Gold Standard.

  • Context: Adopted by the Indian Government’s Calendar Reform Committee. It uses the star Chitra (Spica) as the 180° anchor point.

  • When to use: For standard Natal analysis, Dasha calculations, and creating general Horoscopes.

Krishnamurti (KP)

  • Status: Essential for KP System practitioners.

  • Context: Based on Lahiri but with a slight sub-second adjustment to align with the unique "Sub-Lord" calculations of the KP system.

  • When to use: Specifically for the KP System and high-precision event timing.

Raman

  • Status: Traditional / Individual Standard.

  • Context: Promoted by the legendary B.V. Raman. It differs from Lahiri by about 1° 27'.

  • When to use: If you follow the Raman school of thought or if your lineage uses traditional South Indian standards.

2. Specialized & Ancient Types

  • Yukteshwar: Used in the Holy Science by Sri Yukteswar Giri. It assumes a 24,000-year cycle of the equinoxes.

  • Surya Siddhanta: Derived from the ancient astronomical text. It uses a different rate of precession.

  • Nadi: A specific standard used in classical Nadi Astrology (e.g., Bhrigu Nandi Nadi).

  • True Citra / True Pushya: Modern astronomical calculations that track the exact movement of Spica or Pushya stars rather than an average fixed point.

3. Impact on Your Analysis

Changing the Ayanamsa can shift:

  1. Planet Positions: A planet at 1° Aries might move to 6° Pisces if you switch from Raman to Lahiri.

  2. Dasha Timing: Since Dashas depend on the Nakshatra of the Moon, a 1-degree shift can change a child's balance of Dasha by months or years.

  3. Divisional Charts: Divisional charts (D9, D10) are extremely sensitive. A tiny Ayanamsa shift can move a planet to a different sign in the Navamsha.

4. How to Set Ayanamsa in JyotishGrid

  • Global Default: Go to Settings > Preferences to set your preferred Ayanamsa for all future clients.

  • Client Overlay: When creating a new client, you can choose a specific Ayanamsa if you want to experiment with different standards for that specific individual.

  • Quick Toggle: Use the Settings Icon in the header of any analysis screen to switch Ayanamsas on the fly and see the charts update in real-time.

TIP

Consistency is Key: Unless you are performing deep research, it is recommended to stick to Lahiri (Chitra Paksha) as it provides the most consistent results for traditional Parashari analysis.
